June 4th -July 6th: Synap

Opening reception June 4th 7-9pm.

Synap is an exhibition of Oakland based Canadian artist Ross Campbell’s recent work involving notions of space and order as mediated by technology and other human constructs. Sculpture, installation, and digital media provide the viewer with an insight into the built and rebuilt. Campbell employs hand craft to negate high tech, using digital and architectural forms in a playful exploration of place/time perception. The objects and applications in Synap bring to mind a stage set, with no known narrative and a compressed sense of history.

One and a half years after the passing of Virginia Kleker, this exhibition and book celebrates the life of a prolific artist who is sorely missed. Artists and writers from the Bay Area and beyond have provided an astonishing collection of projects, ideas and recollections of their time spent with Kleker. This month long exhibition will be accompanied by a launch of the book for one night only, proceeds of which will be used to create a scholarship fund in Kleker’s name.

March 21st-27th: Social Evolution Research Gang:

During a week long residency at MacArthur b Arthur the Social Evolution Research Gang will present The Friendship Centre. This Centre will serve as a place for people to share stories, relax, hangout and create projects together. Over the course of the residency SERG hopes to connect with Bay Area residents in a variety of fun and meaningful ways.

The Social Evolution Research Gang (SERG) explores numerous aspects of art and life. As a research gang, they are interested in the small, intimate nuances of daily life: napping, lunch, daydreams, love letters and reading – these social fragments are examples of what they investigate. Oftentimes the moments which are inherently important, in order for life to have a sense of completion and fulfillment, are frequently the ones taken for granted and allowed to fall by the wayside. Working as unconventional researchers, SERG artistically examines daily life in contemporary society.
