Conceptual Chair

In Conceptual Chair, I present a physical homage to “chair as idea,” in the form of a painting that uses the materials of furniture. It is an attempt to bridge fine art’s superior attitude toward craft and design, and a nod toward contemporary painting’s roots in, and rebirth as a result of, conceptual art. Viewable from both sides and meant to be looked through, the chair is a window between spaces. Conceptual Chair asks, how does painting, conceptual art, and craft interact? How does looking through the lens of one object, or the absence of that object– whether as a concept or a thing – form another?
